Retaining Walls Built for the Long Haul

Dakota Earthworks constructs retaining walls throughout Central North Dakota for residential landscaping, farmstead terracing, commercial sites, and agricultural applications. A well-built retaining wall does more than hold back soil — it manages drainage, prevents erosion, and adds usable area to an otherwise unusable slope. Done right, it lasts decades without shifting, leaning, or washing out.

We handle site assessment, proper drainage installation behind the wall, foundation prep, and construction from start to finish. We serve McLean, Burleigh, Morton, Oliver, Mercer, and Ward Counties.

Wall Types We Build

Natural boulder retaining wall Central North Dakota

Boulder Retaining Walls

Large natural stone walls with a rugged, permanent appearance. Popular for residential landscaping, farmstead terracing, and properties where a natural look fits the surroundings. Extremely durable and low maintenance. Well-suited to the wide open character of Central ND properties.

Concrete block retaining wall Bismarck North Dakota

Concrete Block Walls

Engineered concrete block systems with clean lines and consistent appearance. Available in multiple sizes, colors, and face textures. Well-suited to taller walls requiring more precise engineering and to residential properties in Bismarck and Mandan where aesthetics matter alongside function.

Large commercial retaining wall North Dakota

Large-Scale & Commercial Walls

Heavy-duty retaining walls for commercial developments, major grade changes, municipal projects, and large agricultural applications. These projects require more design consideration and equipment — we have the excavator reach and experience to handle them correctly.

Types of Projects We Handle

  • Residential yard and landscape retaining walls
  • Driveway and parking area edge walls
  • Farmstead terracing and hillside retention
  • Commercial site retaining walls
  • Agricultural grade change walls
  • Municipal and road embankment walls
  • Erosion control walls along slopes and drainage areas
  • Wall replacement — removing failed walls and rebuilding correctly

Our Process

1

Site Evaluation

We assess the grade change, soil type, drainage direction, and intended use to determine the right wall type and foundation requirements.

2

Excavation

Base trench excavated to proper depth below frost line. Material removed and graded in preparation for foundation base.

3

Base & Drainage

Compacted aggregate base installed. Drainage layer or drain tile placed behind the wall to manage hydrostatic pressure — critical in ND's clay soils.

4

Wall Construction

Wall built to spec — boulders placed and seated, or concrete block courses laid with batter angle and proper geogrid if required by height.

5

Backfill

Select fill placed and compacted behind the wall in lifts. Done carefully to avoid over-stressing the wall during construction.

6

Final Grade

Grade finished at top and base of wall. Site cleaned up and ready for seeding, landscaping, or whatever comes next.

Why Drainage Matters in North Dakota

Hydrostatic pressure is one of the leading causes of retaining wall failure — and it's particularly relevant in North Dakota's high-clay soils, which don't drain freely. A wall built without adequate drainage behind it will hold water every spring, and that pressure will eventually push even a well-built wall out of plumb. Every wall we build includes proper drainage consideration. It's not optional — it's what separates a wall that lasts from one that needs to be rebuilt in five years.

We also set foundations below the frost line so that freeze-thaw cycling doesn't work the base loose over successive winters.

Pricing

Retaining wall costs vary based on wall type, height, length, material, and site conditions. A simple boulder wall at a residential property is priced differently than an engineered concrete block wall on a commercial site with difficult access. Rather than post numbers that won't reflect your specific project, we prefer to talk it through and give you a real estimate. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a retaining wall cost in North Dakota?

Cost depends heavily on wall type, height, length, and site access. A short boulder wall for residential landscaping runs significantly less than a tall engineered concrete block wall on a commercial site. Call us with your project dimensions and we'll give you a straightforward estimate.

Do retaining walls require a permit?

In most municipalities, walls over a certain height — typically 4 feet — require a building permit and may require an engineered design. Requirements vary by city and county. We can help you understand what applies to your project and location.

How deep does the foundation need to go?

In Central North Dakota with frost depths reaching 4 feet or more, wall foundations need to be set below the frost line or keyed into stable material to prevent frost heave from pushing the base. This is non-negotiable for a wall expected to last long-term.

My existing wall is leaning or shifting — can you fix it?

In most cases, a wall that has moved significantly needs to come down and be rebuilt correctly rather than patched. We can assess the situation and give you an honest recommendation on repair vs. rebuild.

Do you haul away the excavated material?

Yes. We have our own end dump truck and can haul excavated material off site if there's no use for it on the property.
