Landscaping & Finish Grading

After the rough work is done — the excavation, the utilities, the foundation — the land still needs to be finished. Dakota Earthworks handles the final grading, topsoil placement, drainage shaping, and material installation that transforms a construction site into a usable, attractive property. We serve residential, commercial, and rural property owners throughout Central North Dakota.

We bring the same equipment-operator experience to finish work as to the heavy earthwork — precision matters just as much when shaping a yard that needs to shed water properly as when digging a foundation.

Our Process

1

Site Review

We evaluate existing grade, drainage patterns, and any low spots or problem areas before establishing the plan for final grading.

2

Rough Grade Corrections

Any remaining rough spots, construction debris, or subgrade irregularities addressed before finish work begins.

3

Drainage Shaping

Swales, slopes, and drainage paths shaped to move water away from structures and toward appropriate outlets.

4

Topsoil & Materials

Topsoil spread to target depth, decorative rock or aggregate placed, and all material graded smooth and even.

5

Final Grade

Finish grade set to final slopes. Surface prepared for seeding, sodding, or further landscaping by the customer or other trades.

Grading for North Dakota Conditions

In Central ND, proper grading isn't just about appearance — it directly determines whether your property handles snowmelt and spring rain without flooding. Clay soils don't absorb water freely, so surface drainage slope is critical. A yard that looks level may actually be holding water against a foundation or pooling in low spots that stay saturated for weeks every spring.

We grade with function in mind: positive drainage away from structures, swales that carry water to the right places, and slopes that don't cause erosion in heavy rain events. A yard graded correctly the first time saves significant headaches and rework down the road.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much topsoil do I need for a new yard?

A typical lawn establishment calls for 4–6 inches of good topsoil over the finish grade. We can calculate the tonnage or cubic yards needed once we know the area. We source topsoil locally and can deliver and spread it in the same visit.

My yard has standing water every spring — can you fix that?

Usually yes, depending on the cause. If it's a grading issue — low spots, flat areas near the house, or drainage that flows toward rather than away from the structure — regrading and swale work can solve it. If the water table itself is the problem, the solution is more complex. We can assess and give you an honest answer on what's achievable.

Do you supply topsoil or do I need to source it myself?

We supply and deliver topsoil. We source from local material suppliers and can haul it in with our own truck. You don't need to coordinate a separate delivery.

Can you work around existing landscaping features?

Yes. We can grade around established trees, flower beds, and other features you want to keep. Let us know during the site walk and we'll plan the work accordingly.

Do you seed after grading?

Seeding is not part of our standard scope, but we leave the seedbed in proper condition for you or a lawn contractor to seed or sod immediately after we finish.
