Buried Downspout Systems in North Dakota
Underground drainage that moves roof runoff completely away from your foundation — no splash blocks, no surface erosion, no pooling at your walls.

Every downspout on a home or building collects an enormous amount of water during a rain event or spring snowmelt. A standard surface extension deposits that water within a few feet of the foundation — where North Dakota's clay soils hold it against the wall. It pools, saturates the soil, and creates exactly the conditions that lead to foundation moisture problems and basement seepage.
A buried downspout system solves this by capturing roof runoff at the downspout outlet and routing it underground through solid pipe to a discharge point safely away from the building. The water never touches the ground near your foundation. Dakota Earthworks installs buried downspout drainage systems for homes, shops, commercial buildings, and rural properties throughout Central and West-Central North Dakota.
Types of Projects We Handle
- Homes with wet basements or persistent foundation moisture
- New home construction — installed before landscaping while ground is accessible
- Shops, pole buildings, and agricultural structures with large roof drainage areas
- Properties with flat terrain where surface extensions accomplish little
- Homes with landscaping to protect from downspout erosion and splash damage
- Integration with French drain or foundation drainage systems
- Multiple downspouts tied into a single outlet line
- Garrison, Coleharbor, Riverdale, Bismarck, Mandan, Minot, and surrounding areas
Our Installation Process
Assessment & Outlet Planning
We determine roof drainage volume, identify outlet locations, and design the pipe routing — pop-up emitter, daylight, or storm system connection.
Utility Locate
811 call placed before excavation to confirm underground utility locations along the planned pipe route. Required on every project.
Trench Excavation
Trench excavated along the planned route with depth and slope sufficient to drain completely when not in active flow.
Solid Pipe Installation
Solid (non-perforated) drain pipe installed with consistent slope — designed to move water to the outlet, not infiltrate it along the way.
Downspout Connection
Adapter fitted to the existing downspout outlet. Pop-up emitter or daylight end installed at discharge point with rodent protection.
Backfill & Grade
Trench backfilled and compacted. Grade restored to match existing lawn, ready for seeding over the trench line if needed.
How the System Works
Roof runoff enters at the downspout cleanout (A), travels through solid corrugated pipe on a consistent downhill slope, and exits through a pop-up emitter flush in the lawn. The emitter opens automatically under flow pressure and closes when dry — keeping out rodents and backflow with zero manual operation.

North Dakota Considerations
Buried downspout systems in North Dakota have to account for conditions that don't apply in milder climates:
- Spring snowmelt timing. Roof snowmelt starts before the frost releases. The pipe needs to function before the soil is thawed — gravity does the work even when the surrounding ground is still frozen.
- Freeze blockage prevention. Pipes that hold standing water can freeze and block spring drainage. We design systems to drain completely when not flowing — no standing water left to freeze.
- Pop-up emitter performance. Emitters need to open under spring flows even with light frost still in the ground surface. We position and protect outlets accordingly.
- Large roof area buildings. Shops and agricultural structures shed significant water volume during thaw. We size collector pipe for the combined flow from all connected downspouts.
Service Areas
Dakota Earthworks installs buried downspout drainage systems throughout Central and West-Central North Dakota, including Washburn, Garrison, Coleharbor, Riverdale, Hazen, Beulah, Bismarck, Mandan, Minot, Turtle Lake, Underwood, Center, and surrounding rural areas. We serve McLean, Burleigh, Morton, Oliver, Mercer, and Ward Counties.
Key Components We Use
Vented Cleanout — Open
Removable leaf filter basket. Hinged access door — no tools required. Fits 2×3 and 3×4 downspouts. Black absorbs solar heat for faster spring thaw in ND.
Vented Cleanout — Closed
Fully sealed when closed. Vented design prevents vacuum lock. Heavy-duty, Made in USA. Easy annual inspection — clear the leaf filter each fall.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a buried downspout system cost?
Cost depends on how many downspouts are connected, pipe run length to appropriate outlet points, and site access conditions. Call us with your situation and we'll give you a real number, not a broad range.
What size pipe do you use?
Typically 4-inch solid PVC or corrugated drain pipe, depending on roof area and run length. Larger diameter may be appropriate for buildings with extensive roof area or long pipe runs. We size to the application.
How deep is the pipe buried?
Typically 12 to 24 inches depending on route and outlet requirements. The pipe doesn't need to be below frost depth because it drains completely when not in active flow — no standing water left to freeze.
Can you tie multiple downspouts into one system?
Yes. Multiple downspouts can feed into a common pipe running to a single outlet. We design the collector pipe to handle the combined flow from all connected downspouts.
Is this different from a French drain?
Yes. A buried downspout system uses solid pipe to carry roof runoff to a discharge point — not designed to infiltrate water along the way. A French drain uses perforated pipe and gravel to intercept and infiltrate groundwater or surface sheet flow. Both solve drainage problems but address different sources of water.
Do you haul away the excavated material?
Yes. We have our own truck and can remove excavated soil from the site if it's not needed on the property.
